Clipping an amplifier is the number one cause of woofer death. How to recognize clipping is hard to explain. If you turn your volume up one notch at a time, it should get noticably louder every time. When you don't hear it get any louder, you are into clipping. Turn the volume down a couple of notches and the woofers will live long and propogate.Does that make sense?

The link that Gettnbig posted explains clipping quite well. It explains why it's NOT underpowering the speaker that blows it. I really suggest that anyone who thinks you can blow a driver from not giving it enough power to give it a read. I've been looking for something like that I can point people to for a good explanation.

Exceeding the woofers wattage capability blows woofers...
If you are running an amp into clip and the output wattage from the amp at clip is still within the performance ability and power handling of the speaker, why would the speaker blow up?
The trouble starts when an amp is driven into clip producing way more power than the speaker was designed to handle. (And for that matter driving a speaker with a non-clipping constant power signal exceeding the ability of the speaker to handle the power).

I've found that the whole "Under powering speakers blows them" is a common sales gimmick for future shop. they use it to try to sell you bigger amplifiers, home recievers etc. they also really push high current stuff (and as everyone should know, more current = more heat in the coil, and more loss the longer your wire is)
It's amazing how they try to sell you things you don't need, because they think that you're going to distort everything till the signal is unrecognizable.
