a huge motor and suspension is most desirable in an ib application, is this the case in most 6.5" and smaller speakers, not usually, but some do. a huge suspension and such is not typically ideal for a mid and midbass application where attack and speed is very important, not always the case but very often

Again, there are two camps when it comes to IB drivers. Either you build it with a LOW Qts (large magnet, stiff suspension) and force the driver to work in that environment. Drawback is you need POWER to force that driver to do what YOU want and not the other way around. Quite often these same drivers will work in a relatively small box too, for the same reasons.

You build it with a high VAS so that it naturally wants a large sealed box and as part of the package a HIGH Qts comes along with it. This results in light cones, smaller motors, looser supensions - all of which also help sensitivity so you don't need a megawatt to hear it.
There are arguments for both designs but I think that I would rather run a driver in an environment it is happy in than force it to conform to some messed up alignment.

wow i always thought that the best way to get a speaker to sound good was speaker placement, and adhearing to some simple rules of phyco acustics. i noticed that the "high mount tweeter came into play after mark elddrige did it on his four runner and won at iasca finals back in 1998, befor that usd had tough us about " polar tilt" of a driver and placing tweeters low in the kick and as close to the midbass driver as possible. so what changed from 1978, when the first kicks came out with the mid and tweeter down there, to after 1998 when mark one with them up in the a pillars? well i dont think that the latest and greatest speaker material will make them sound any better nor has it made them sound any better, they simply wont work if they are not install properley!! nor can i justify spending 2 weeks working on a speaker pod for my car just to gain a "possible" not guranteed, better sound to a judge. speakers havent changed in 60 yrs only the materials that are used in them, they are still horribly inefficient, and are definatley the weakest link in getting to a "life like" sound. in the end the best speaker is your own two ears, and if it sounds good to you then enjoy and be glad. peace out!!

that why you dont spend 2 weeks maiing pods for your car, you do tesing first. so the materials used to design and build speakers has changed, the capabilities of alot of speakers built today far exceeds that of speakers 10,20,30 years ago. the way a speaker works hasnt changed, but the way we apply them certainly has. the constantly agreed fact in this debate is that the install must be right for the speaker, but the right install can be different with the same speaker in 2 different vehicles, which is where extensive vehicle testing must be done, to spend 2 weeks building something that might not work is crazy, if you plan on investing that much time into something try it out first
