New Myth: Clipping damages speakers.

To SQmonster, why not use a small battery instead of a cap?

 

Price, space, following a theme, lights, staying in a certain category...

You're right about the extra battery though. I ran one in my Sentra for a couple of years and loved it!

And I will support the position that clipping CAN damage speakers, but much like the discussion about large storage capacitors, not for the obvious reasons that most people go on about.

1 watt hard clipped won't burn a coil and 10,000 clean will melt almost anything. It's the bit in the middle that causes much discussion

 

Technically speaking it IS a myth. I tend to blame the clipping destroys tweeters statement on the manufacturers who label tweeters with "100Watt". With a passive crossover and a hundred watt amp driven deep into clipping that tweeter is in trouble.

A clipped signal increases the area, period. This can result in too much power, which is my point. Usually the tweeters blow because the added spectral content occurs in the higher harmonics and tweeters are fragile. Regardless the cause was too much power. Otherwise severly distorted electric guitar would blow speakers at any volume.
