I was listening to a set of 2 way home speaker with 6.5" mid and the midbass/bass sounds awesome. Strong, tight, punchy, without a sub. Then I put this mid to the doors on the Accord and all this sweet bass/midbass is gone (midrange was there though). I think the enclosure plays the biggest part here, therefore I've decided to save up and have a shop to do a door pod. The EQ thing is kinda out of my mind right now.

Steve, I wanted to get enclosure for my 130KP too, but a shop installer told me that the Focals are good open-air speakers so enclosure may not be necessary or may not help much.

anybody else agree or disagree?

^ as i have mention in the CDT thread that the K2P driver has a fairly high FS (68.88hz) and o.k force factor..... and also high Q (.65) which makes it a good speaker for IB applications.

I know the Specs suggest it plays well on IB, but when compared to that 6.5 home speaker, it's not well at all. That home speaker is two way with 6.5mid and 1" silk dome in a ported enclosure. Its midbass is very good and the driver doesn't need to move a lot (excursion) to bring out that midbass. The K2P actually moves a lot and lots excursion I can feel it on the doors but midbass is weak. That's why I think enclosure is the problem.

I bought a reflex pad by Cascade from partsexpress and it arrived today. I installed it on one of the doors and did a short comparison. The track was " Saturday Nights Alright" by Nickelback. The seperation of the guitar and the drum percussion is better. Before it seem everything was mixed together. Midbass also improves a bit. I can hear the drum kick better. Although the K2P has got respectable midrange already but it still made it a bit better, not by much but noticible. Just to share this with you. Here's a pic of the pad installed:

I’m thinking to lean towards the standing wave issue created by the interior then the woofer enclosure. It was evident in your first sound clip, when you were up close to the K2P woofer…. the lower mid came alive. But as you move away it faded away, then the upper frequency takes over.

maybe try this.. just open both doors and listen to it, and see if the midbass improves or not. the height inside still remains the same, but the width is no longer the same and its no longer facing each other.

I doubt very much when you were auditioning the home speakers… you would have the speaker facing each other (about 4.5’ apart) in a real small room with the ceiling no higher then 4 feet, and the room had the door & window shut tight. otherwise….. its not a fair comparison is it?

I set the tweeter to -7db just tonight and midbass did come out a bit more. Then later I find myself wanting to turn down the tweeter even more. The tweets indeed sound bright sometimes and that's probably the reason my ears hurt in these couple days. Now since you mentioned standing wave, is there any way or products that will help to decrease it? I tried the deflex pad inside the door and I can notice a difference, but I guess you are talking about the standing wave inside car, not doors, correct?

Right now the sound is better than when the first day these k2p were installed. What I have done since was:

1. Sealed up the doors better
2. More brown bread on the doors
3. Set -7db on the tweets
4. Adding deflex pad
5. Adjusting crossover. Now the high pass is 50hz @12db and low pass to sub is 50hz @12db. This is the best combination I can find after a while of test/error.

Things that i want to do next:
1. Build a fiberglass door pod for the k2p woofer, still saving up.
2. Add an EQ, and tune it by RTA
3. Run the k2p active, to quiet the tweets even more, but won't be done for another 6 months, since money is an issue..

PS. I will do a movie clip tomorrow with the current setting. Thanks for all your help! I really appreciate it!

are there any reflection issues? they can have an affect similar to the standing wave described, bring in an old blanket to cover the possible reflection issue to verify. This can make a tweeter sound edgy and a mid be off in tonality
