if you plan on using an ipod, the integration with the unit is amazing.
i personally download everything in FLAC and just convert it to apple lossless.
using dbpoweramp, its very fast.
(and always use audiochecker to ensure they began as flac and no mp3's).
so there are options!
as far as itunes. do they offer actual lossless music? or are you just taking whatever quality and putting it into apple lossless format. ...because that kinda defeats the purpose if so.

I don't use iPod or iTunes, just rip my CDs and store them as FLAC. Then whenever I need CD for a car I just burn a copy. CD always get scratched, stepped on, etc. in my cars.
I was planning just to use several USB thumb drives with WAV files on them.
I bought iPod few years ago, never liked it back then.
Maybe should try one again, especially if it's possible to get exact same data from CD to headunit through iPod, and integration is better than just regular storage device.
