my p01 detected my 120gb 6th gen classic without problem, ill test tonight if it bypass the ipod DAC.

When i had my 9861, if the EQ was enabled on the ipod it would send it to the deck with the EQ on (sounded bad), so if it doesn't do it with the p01 my guess is that it bypass the ipod DAC.

that'd great! thanks!

with the 6th gen, do you have control of the ipod through the unit AND the ipod itself when connected?

yes i can chose if i want to control from the ipod or the radio.

I just tested and the ipod EQ affect the sound... this sucks since it probably mean that the DAC are not bypass in the 6th gen. ill try with my son touch and see if it's any different.

same behavior using a touch, so there's hope... maybe the EQ is done on the digital side???

thanks for doing that test!

im was going to pick up an ipod this weekend but i think i will wait until the full compatibility list is released.

as far as the eq....your option seems the only viable one, unless the dacs aren't passed at all:S. i'm gonna browse the internet and see if its stated somewhere when the eq'ing is done.

i'm just trying to understand this here.

normally for audio there are adc's and dac's.
the adcs are represented by sampling rate and precision, applying a numerical value to a sound wave at a given time. with values being applied 44,000 times a second (generally).

this is now digital and cleaned up, and this signal is then converted back to an analogue signal. the goal to lose as little information as possible from the original.
this is then now amplified and sent out for us to hear.

is this how an ipod functions?

if so, could the eq not just be applied to the original sound wave before any conversion is undergone?

I doubt that it's ipod digital input, as it appears Apple has to license permission to access the digital bitstream, and according to the Pioneer site for the P99RS, it uses a separate Ipod cable (CDIU50)and not the USB. This I gathered while doing a search on the Alpine units, and there are some comments that lead me to believe that unless it's an Ipod specific usb input, it's not a digital input. The CDA 9886 even has usb input but not for the Ipod, you have to use an Ipod specific cable 422i, whereas the new Cda-105, 117, and x-305, are all direct usb input and specifically state that the head unit's DAC is used.

I get my 99's the week after next!!!! I am stoked that I can finally have all the control that I want!
I wonder if it will skip at high spl, like the 880 and 800 did?

these are pretty sweet decks. I got a couple for some people and my price was around $1100US to their door. Mostly that factors on the yen to cdn $$ exchange rate.

i use the standard ipod cable plugged in the usb port... and the CDIU50 look like a basic USB cable also

The equing is done on the digital side and the ipod is feeding the unit with a pcm stream and not the actual file.

This is the standard pinout of a usb cable
Pin 1 - Red wire, VCC (+5V)
Pin 2 - White wire, D- (Data -)
Pin 3 - Green wire, D+ (Data +)
Pin 4 - Black wire, GND (Ground)

So it's impossible to feed an analog feed on the Data transport (unless the ipod have a circuit to switch to analog on pin 2-3, i doubt it)

So, the p99/p01 is receiving a digital stream but we need to find out if the codec of the ipod actually good enough to qualify the ipod as an SQ device.
